Includes not only every known portrait of Thoreau made from life, but a full array of daguerrotypes, photographs, paintings, drawings, cartoons, broadsides, news clippings, maps, and charts of his Concord contemporaries, his friends, and their times. Although there were many biographies of Thoreau at the time, this was the first book to portray his life graphically. The text is derived for the most part from Thoreau's own autobiographical writings, supplemented on occasion by the writings of his friends and contemporaries.
