Placing Thoreau's surveying in its historical context, "Thoreau the Land Surveyor" explains the cultural and ideological implications of surveying work in the mid-19th Century. This insightful study shows how Thoreau's profession as a surveyor impacted his environmental sensibility as well as his literary works; Chura's book shows that Thoreau's manuscript surveys and corresponding field notes are themselves worthy of literary analysis. This book was reviewed in Thoreau Society Bulletin 274, Spring 2011, p. 8.
University Press of Florida, 2010. Paperback, 6 x 9 inch format, 211 pp.
