In November 1868, a young theological student from New York City arrived in Concord, Massachusetts. Edmond Hotham had never visited the place before, and he immediately began preparations to pursue the "wild life." He met Henry Thoreau's friend, poet William Ellery Channing, who likely introduced Edmond to Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson gave the man permission to build his "Earth-cabin" on the Walden Pond property, as Thoreau had. This sojourn was the first and only time someone emulated Thoreau's experiment in simplicity at the initial site. Edmond built his house along the same shoreline as Thoreau's, and lived here for six months during the winter of 1868-1869. This book is the first lengthy study on Edmond Hotham. This book was reviewed in Thoreau Society Bulletin 308, Winter 2020, pp. 8-9. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR.
